surface door closer

In and Out

So, I was up watching television late last night. I’ve been suffering from some serious insomnia lately. So, while I was watching one of those home and garden channels, they had this show on where they were redoing an office building and they were fixing the doors, windows and basically giving it a new and fresh and modern look. They were looking at sliding glass doors and I heard the guy mention “Whether you’re looking for a concealed closer or a surface door closer…” In all honesty, I didn’t know what was what… And then I did some searching on them. I never realized that the pieces of doors had names. I thought that they were spring loaded. Well, I guess they could be.

So I kept watching. They really did the place nicely. They used a lot of low energy hardware and even looked at using some eco-friendly energy savings techniques. I was pleasantly surprised!

When one door closes…

I’ve found my attention span going everywhere lately. I swear, sometimes I’m going a little ADD in my old age.

I remember sitting in class when I was in High School (not that long ago, so stop snickering) and I remember seeing the surface door closer (that’s what they are called folks). You know, the ones the teachers would finagle to keep propped open on hot days and the ones that they would loosen up to watch it catch an unsuspecting leaving visitor who wasn’t watching where they were going as it swung shut with speed faster then light.

I also remember my first job when I worked at the County Courthouse. They had glass doors… and I loved to work the front desk with the glass doors there. Used to watch everyone walk past (I am a people person…).  I just couldn’t understand what they used for sliding glass door hardware. Obviously the regular wooden door hardware wouldn’t work…

I guess, if I really wanted to know, I could do some indepth super secret squirrel research… but I’m happy not knowing. You always need that air of mystery…
